Dové’s latest social marketing campaign is called #PassTheCrown. After the brand discovered that 70% of Black women feel they are not represented properly in media and advertising, Dove launched a campaign to tell the real stories of women.

Specifically, in the United States, many states do not have laws against discrimination based on hair type, even if it is natural. That means: Black women may be denied employment opportunities or career advancement. Similarly, Black children may be denied school or educational opportunities because of their hair.

With that in mind, Dove has partnered with the National Urban League, Color of Change, and Western Center to form the CROWN Coalition to End Hair Color-Based Racism in the United States. The brand believes that everyone should embrace their natural hair without judgment.

So the Unilever-owned company released a new study: the “Dove 2021 CROWN Study for Girls,” which reveals the alarming rates and young ages at which Black girls are discriminated against based on their hair in school. The data was revealed during a special online event for beauty editors on January 25, 2022.

DOVE LAUNCHES 'AS EARLY AS FIVE' TO ILLUMINATE HOW YOUNG RACE-BASED HAIR  DISCRIMINATION STARTS IN ONGOING EFFORT TO PASS THE CROWN ACT IN REMAINING  36 U.S. STATES

As part of the brand’s long-standing commitment to ending race-based hair discrimination through The CROWN Act (Creating a Respectful and Open World for Natural Hair), the study revealed that 53% of Black mothers whose daughters experienced hair discrimination said their daughters had experienced discrimination as early as age 5, and that approximately 86% of Black teens who experienced discrimination had experienced it since age 12.

Driven by these findings, Dove released a short film, “As Early As Five,” inspired by real-life stories of people who have experienced hair discrimination and bias in both school and the workplace. As Early As Five depicts three discriminatory situations a girl experiences – starting in elementary school, middle school and into adulthood – all inspired by real-life events.

Campaign Results:

Dove’s short film “As Early As Five” reached 146k views on YouTube with over 600 positive comments from viewers.

By tapping into the “pain” of hair-based discrimination – something that is rarely mentioned – Dove made a splash in 2022. Thanks to the media success of this campaign, Dove signed with 19 states in the US to recognize the CROWN Act to end hair-based discrimination, helping women of color have a better life.
